Hi, my name is Kara and I want to share my fitness journey. Add jazz…

My journey started when I realized that the grim reaper has been looking over my shoulder.  In truth, I know that it is my actions or the lack of action, that has made him appear.  My doctor had to start prescribing me high blood pressure medication.  I am over weight and out of shape but what the heck, I’ll take a pill.  It’s not hard to swallow.  However, in my case, I tend to get all of the rare side effects (not fun).  Let’s just say everyone wants to take a pass on having gout, trust me.  So, pills are not the answer for me.  That is when I walked through the doors of Razor Edge and asked for help.

I asked for a trainer 4 times a week and was fortunate enough to get Brock.  He is caring and listens to me.  We started with an assessment of how flexible my body was.  I was shocked at how out of balance my body was.  Even more shocking were my locked-up joints.  I had no idea how limited my motion was and how it was affecting me in my everyday life.  I tend to be a bit of a puzzle and had Brock saying interesting a lot (which I equate to; you’re not doing so bad for someone your age at the doctor’s office.  WHAT THE HECK!). 

That’s when Brock enlisted the help of JC to identify some stretches to help with my balance.  Then Melissa came to one of my sessions and gave me stretches to unlock my shoulders.  Within in 2 weeks my shoulders became un-locked.  I came into a session and for the first time I was able to do a plank and not only a plank but I could alternate picking one hand up off the floor.  GET OUT!  For the first time in decades, I am able to sleep through the night.  I did not realize how much my locked shoulders were bothering.  I feel blessed not to mention fabulous.

What I didn’t know and what I would like to share with everyone is between Brock, JC and Melissa: I had an athletic trainer, a chiropractor assistant, a yoga instructor and a physical therapist in the room with me.  What an amazing collaborating team!  They were able to put me back together.  I still have a long way to go but I know I will get there.  How can I not when I have these 3 amazing people supporting me!  And has for the grim reaper, too-da-loo. I can’t wait to see what will happen in another week!

It’s an honor to share a small portion of my weight loss journey with you. I have been a member at Razor Sharp since October 2020. What motivated me to work out was when I started noticing that my weight started affecting my mental health and confidence.

 

I felt lonely and wanted to stay inside and not go out in public. The first step I took to help myself out was to open my gym membership. I decided to distance myself from people who did not support me and didn’t motivate me to work out. That is when I decided to get a personal trainer to always give me that support and encouragement. That is when my life started changing.

 

My trainer has been a huge part of my success. Not only did she boost my confidence each session, but she motivated me and kept me accountable. I don’t know if I could have done this without her. Not only do I look better, but I FEEL better.

 

I have lost 50 pounds since October 2020. An example of what I did to keep myself motivated and accountable was writing down my bi-weekly weight loss to go back and see my progress whenever I was “too tired to work out” so I would get up and go! Investing in myself has been the best decision I’ve made. I’ve realized that “Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.”

“I’ve been working on my weight loss journey for about three years now, and it’s been a great journey thus far! My goals are to lose weight, tone my overall body, and become stronger. I train three days a week with Teresina, take group classes when my schedule allows, and also workout on my own. I recently tried the new LEVEL UP class, Torch, and it was amazing!

 

I am also working on bettering my nutrition as a mother of two boys; it hasn’t been the best. I met my friend Emma early on in my journey, and we became great friends that motivate each other and push each other to do more. We sometimes work out together and keep each other on track with our goals. I love going to the gym because it is a great stress reliever for me.

 

Home workouts are great, but being at Razor Sharp, there is a ton of equipment that I don’t have at home, and it allows me to do more than I would at home. I am not where I want to be just yet, but I know that I can and will get there with my trainer, Teresina, and Emma, and everyone else that’s there for me!”

“I have been on my fitness journey for about four years now. I never knew that going to the gym could be so addicting. When I first started, I made a lot of progress. When I got a little discouraged, I would turn to my partner in crime, Mariela, who has also been on her fitness journey.

 

We have the best relationship. When we are at the gym together, we encourage each other when it gets hard. Having a workout buddy makes working out more fun. Mariela and I are this together and will continue to keep each other up! When I started at Razor Sharp, I also wanted a personal trainer to help me with my training. I found Kristine, and she has helped me more than you can imagine. When I workout, I do not want to have any pain, so Kristine has helped me with form.

 

Because of that, I have gotten a lot stronger. I am so grateful for Mariela and Kristine for pushing me to reach my goals.”

“ I have been weight lifting since I was 14 years old, and it has become somewhat of an addiction. My focus in the early years was bodybuilding. Now that I am in my 50s, my focus has shifted to maintaining the progress that I made all of my life. I am trying to stay as healthy as I can as I get older. A combination of weight lifting, cardio, and a reasonable diet has, in my opinion, prevented some of the problems other people my age deal with. Seeing people older than me working out here at Razor gives me the motivation to continue doing so. If they can come into the gym to stay active, there is no reason that I cannot.

 

Coming into the gym also allows me to relieve stress. I do not smoke or drink and do not rely on caffeine to get through my day. Doing a daily workout enables me to unplug from the everyday stresses for a couple of hours. I like that Razor Sharp offers a social aspect to daily life. I have met and gotten to know several other regular members. Most of the other members are easygoing, willing to spot you on the weights when needed, and engage in friendly conversation.

Ever since I can remember, fitness has been a huge part of my life. At a young age, I was involved in competitive sports, which continued throughout my high school years. I continued to stay active during college by joining a gym. To balance my work, school, and study schedule, I started working out at 5 AM. Most of my friends thought that I was crazy; however, that’s what I needed, and it worked in my schedule. That early timeframe became an integral part of my life to this day.

 

When I graduated and started my job as an emergency room nurse working various shifts and raising two boys, the gym was not conducive to my schedule, so I started running. I enjoyed the outdoors, so running outside was so exhilarating! My competitive spirit led me to participate in many competitive running events. It was wonderful to have my family cheering me on when I ran through the finish line.

 

In 2015, I decided to join Razor Sharp. I was at a point in my life that I was looking for other options to stay active. Razor Sharp not only offered that but exceeded that in the group classes. The early morning times were just what I needed. The classes were challenging, but they pushed me to the next level. The variety of workouts offered allowed me to target different muscle groups and keep me focused. Strength training, aka Group Power, is my favorite class. This class became an addiction for me. The instructors and members of the class became part of my “gym family.” They all pushed me to do better and work harder, and my competitive spirit thrived on that.

 

Working hard and staying active will always be part of me; I am truly blessed with my life, health, family, and career. Thanks to Razor Sharp, especially Kate Thomas, I have gained another blessing to be thankful for.
